Scientific Interests and Research Areas

Lab of Molecular Genetics of Microorganisms was established in 2004 by the former head of Lab Prof. Elena N. Ilina. Our team is mainly focused on studying the molecular peculiarities of drug resistance formation in microorganisms and ways to overcome resistance. In addition, we are solving local problems related to molecular typing of microbial populations and the development of new ways of bacterial species identification. The main research areas include:

  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis: Study of mechanisms of drug resistance and pathogenicity factors mycobacteria strains, which are endemic to Russia, using genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic methods. Description of population structure of the pathogen.
  • Study of the interaction of virulent bacteriophages with ESKAPE pathogens (bacterial pathogens belonging to the species Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp.) in order to update the principles of  phage therapy.
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae: Decoding of new molecular mechanisms of gonococcus resistance to various antibiotics (penicillin, ceftriaxone and spectinomycin) used in the treatment of gonorrhea.
  • Escherichia coli: Study of formation of mutants resistant to quinolones or aminocoumarin in strains with defective proteins, responsible for the DNA strands transport, the SOS-response system and the 3R system (RecA, LexA repressor, and DNA-helicase II).
  • Adherent-invasive E. сoli (AIEC): Study of the microorganism as a possible causative agent for Crohn's disease. Study of biological pathways of the effect of AIEC virulence factors on human intestinal cells.
